
Discovering Archaeology Event
Get ready for a great day of fun on Thursday 10 April with the Wessex Archaeology team and project team members from Kier and the Environment Agency who will be providing hands-on, family friendly archaeology activities linked to the exciting discoveries made during The Moors at Arne project.
This drop-in event is a chance to dig deeper into the project and the discoveries archaeologists have made and will include fun and activities for all the family. There will opportunities to meet the archaeologists, Virtual Reality Experiences that bring history to life and where you can step into the homes of Anglo-Saxon, Iron Age and Roman people; handle artefacts from The Moors at Arne digs; a chance to try your hand at environmental archaeology; and explore 3D visuals and interactive displays where you can view rare items.
No need to book – Drop in any time between 10am-4pm. All events will be run throughout the day.
• Meet the archaeologists – Meet the team who excavated the site and ask them anything!
• Virtual Reality – Wessex Archaeology has created immersive virtual reality environments that bring history to life. Based on archaeological evidence from local sites, step into the Anglo-Saxon, Iron Age and Roman periods and see for yourself inside the homes of people in the past.
• Understand The Moors at Arne Project – Come and meet the team who’ve designed the project and understand how it’s creating valuable habitats.
• Handle artefacts – get hands-on with historic artefacts from the site.
• Have a go – Try out environmental archaeology and understand how we find out what people ate, what plants grew and what the climate was like 2000 years ago.
• 3D visuals and interactive displays – some artefacts are too delicate to handle. Explore detailed 3D scans of rare fragile artefacts.
In the evening from 5pm -7pm, there is also an opportunity for those who want to learn a bit more and dig a bit deeper. Join the Wessex Archaeology, Kier and Environment Agency archaeology team for after hours informal chat, panel discussion, and the opportunity to see artefacts up close. Here is your chance to ask the team anything!
All events are free, are wheelchair and pushchair friendly, and guide dogs are allowed.
