Lettering and Engraving Skills
Come and learn how to engrave lettering into stone. This half-day workshop for beginners and intermediate stone-carvers helps develop concentration, co-ordination and control, as well as the correct use of tools for engraving.
Taught by a monumental mason with years of experience, this practical course introduces the principles of setting out lettering by hand and cutting inscriptions into stone.
This is a three hour introductory workshop into the art of lettering and engraving, where you will be able to engrave a letter, number or an organic shape on Purbeck stone.
During the session you will learn how to lay out lettering or an organic shape on the stone, where no drawing skills are necessary. You will be shown how to hold and use the tools correctly to make controlled incisions into the stone where a level of concentration and coordination is required. Suitable designs and templates will be provided, although you are most welcome to bring your own ideas and designs to discuss with the tutor.
